Welcome to La Scala of Public Health

logologo This is a special issue of the online newsletter of the Italian Society of Hygiene, Preventive Medicine and Public Health (SItI) addressing the more than 1,500 delegates from 62 countries who are about to reach Milan for a unique scientific event that we would like to metaphorically define “La Scala of Public Health”.
There are always many reasons to visit Milan. Some may come for its art, such as Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper. Some may come for the opera at the world-famous La Scala. Others may come for the shopping, in via Monte Napoleone, or to enjoy the beauty of the nearby Italian lakes and mountains. In 2015 there are even more reasons to come to Milan. It is the setting for Expo 2015, a vast complex in which the countries of the world demonstrate their commitment to “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life”. This provides an appropriate backdrop for two other major events concerned with the health and wellbeing of our societies, at national and European level. Two major conferences will be held in parallel at the Milan Conference Centre (Mi.Co.). These are the 48th National Congress of the Italian Society of Hygiene, Preventive Medicine and Public Health (SItI) and the 8th European Public Health (EPH) Conference. All together there will be about 3,000 of us, presenting 2,300 scientific contributions in 270 sessions.
All three of these events recognise the enormous challenges that face our societies, in Italy, Europe, and the world. The announced presence of the Italian Ministry of Health Mrs. Beatrice Lorenzin (opening ceremony, 1pm Thursday) and the Governor of Lombardy Region Mr. Roberto Maroni (Thursday 8pm during the Welcome reception at Lombardy Building) ennobles these scientific events. This special Newsletter summarizes the last news together with some practical information, "Fuoricongresso" opportunities and curiosities. Very happy to meet you all soon.

Epidemiologia & Prevenzione

The best of the SItI Congress on a special english issue

logo In order to promote methodologically sound scientific research, to disseminate within the international scientific community original contributions and findings in the field of hygiene and public health as well as to share best practices at the European level - SItI co-edited an english supplement of the peer-reviewed journal Epidemiologia & Prevenzione (IF=1,453) that collects the best scientific pieces of research presented at the SItI Congress of Milan. The supplement includes 26 papers presenting reviews and original data in the different fields of public health research framework. Of them we mention the Foreward signed by the presidents of SItI and EUPHA and interesting articles on the reduction of vaccine coverage in Italy, nutritional guidelines, health of migrants, molecular epidemiology and the vaccinarSi SItI web site of the Italian Society of Hygiene.

How to reach the MI.CO. congress centre

logo We strongly recommend to use public transportation in Milan which is generally reliable. (in particular the Underground and city trains services). Here some useful information:

logoThe MICO is located in a central area of Milan 4km far from the City Centre (Piazza Duomo). It has two entrances, one in Piazza Carlo Magno (at the corner with via Gattamelata) and the other in Viale Eginardo (opposite side, near PORTELLO M5 underground station).
- From Central Station we suggest M2 (green line) to Porta Garibaldi and then M5 (violet line) to PORTELLO (close to the entrence of the Convention Center).
- From Linate airport bus n. 73 to San Babila then M1 to Lotto and M5 to Portello.
- From Malpensa airport: FN train (Ferrovie Nord) direction Milan Cadorna, stop at DOMODOSSOLA (pay attention, not all the trains stop there).

The metro station closest to Mi.Co is PORTELLO (M5); other neighboring Domodossola FN (M5 and train), Amendola Fiera (M1), Lotto (M1 and M5) where there are also trains to Fiera Rho-Expo.
